Call for Expressions of Interest for Funding to Improve Energy Efficiency in the NHS

NHS Trusts and Foundation Trusts can bid for a share of £50 million capital funding to invest during 2013-14. The funding will support new and innovative projects to improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions and increase resilience to climate change.

Initial expression of interest bids must be submitted by 28 February 2013.

BMJ: NHS could save £1bn by adopting green strategies used in kidney units

Green Nephrology in the BMJ! Commenting on a Green Nephrology study into savings from green initiatives in kidney units, National Clinical Director for Kidney Care, Dr Donal O'Donoghue, said "it’s not unreasonable to expect approaching £1 billion per year saving if the enthusiasm and focused work of the kidney community spread across the whole NHS."

Counting the carbon cost of care

The NHS Carbon Reduction Strategy has set targets for the reduction of GHG emissions within the NHS. If we are to meet these challenging targets, our health economists will have to become as familiar with the rationing of healthcare of the basis of carbon as they presently are with financial resources. A scary thought? Perhaps for them - but it shouldn't be for clinicians. But who will work out how to do these carbon accounts?

An integrated kidney care system?

Where you live, does everyone with kidney disease know that they've got it and what it means? Are local GPs confident about how to manage them, and who will benefit from referral?  It was inspiring to hear from at least three nephrologists presenting at the Renal Service Change Management study day last week, who clearly feel that what happens to people in primary care is their business too.

Cutting CO2 in kidney care: 102 heat exchangers fitted!

102 heat exchangers have been fitted to dialysis machines across 4 renal services following the CSH 'Cutting CO2 in Kidney Care ' project, which secured funding at the Pitch Pledge Party event in October 2011, a 10:10 initiative in partnership with The Funding Network and the Guardian. The project was based on the case study from East Kent renal service, which has reduced its carbon footprint by retrofitting heat exchangers to renal dialysis machines. Each heat exchanger is estimated to save approximately 0.366 tonnes CO2e per year.

The Impact of Paper Procurement in the NHS.

The NHS has committed to reduce its carbon footprint but, aside from ensuring that legislative targets are reached, the benefits of decreasing greenhouse gas emissions are well documented. Yet the NHS faces increasing financial and service pressures; meaning that ‘green’ working is not always at the forefront of consideration. Many NHS organisations in England procure paper through the NHS Supply Chain Core Stationary list, which only contains paper produced from virgin (non-recycled) sources. As such, out of the 3.6 million reams of paper procured through NHS Supply Chain, only 29,000 were produced from recycled sources.
