Introducing the NurSus Toolkit
Although the concept of sustainability has been explored in the literature, inclusion of sustainability topics in nursing and healthcare curricula is limited. The aim of the European NurSusTOOLKIT project is to enhance the availability of an evidence-based, learning offer in Sustainability Literacy and Competency (SLC) in nurse education by developing innovative teaching and learning approaches and materials.
Evidence for topic inclusion was based on: a systematic literature review; a scoping activity focused on the nursing curriculum in partner organisations; a broader participatory Delphi survey of curriculum opportunities was conducted with stakeholders across Europe in order to identify how to integrate key sustainability issues and find examples of good practice in nurse education. Students were engaged in this process through social media and focus groups.
The outcomes of the project are on-line (free) materials covering 5 sustainability themes with more than 60 topics (up to 10 core topics are available in 6 European languages). Themes: Underpinning concepts of sustainability and health; Links between providing health care and sustaining the global environment; Relationships between health and the environment; Healthy (sustainable) communities; Social and policy context. Participants will have an opportunity to engage in some of the NurSusTOOLKIT activities.
