NHS Sustainability Day 2014 - what are you doing?

NHS sustainability day is on the 27th March. That is just over 1 month away. This is a great opportunity for us to promote enviromental practices within our teams. Lots of people are signing their Trust up to the 2 at 2 initiative run by the NHS Forest. This is planting 2 trees at 2pm on the day as a commitment to sustainability within the Trust. Maybe you could speak to the estates people at your Trust and see whether this could be done where you work. This is a great opportunity to catch the attention of your Trust Board and highlight the importance of sustainability.

There are lots of different things you can do though, check out the NHS sustainability day website to find out what others are doing.  In Oxford we have arranged a launch event for the new use of a green space by the local mental health hospital which is really exciting. It would be great to hear about any ideas for what we as members of psych susnet could do on this day however big or small. It would be good to find out if anyone is doing anything locally.

One thing you cold do is print out the poster that is on the resources page of the network and can also be found here. Or maybe you could get people in your team to use the carbon addict website to see if they suffer from carbon dependence , this can be found here.

All the best in thinking and planning what you could do...

Hi Daniel,

Finally I get around to reading all my emails fully - thanks for all the information that you send through.

I'm really interested in the details of the project discussed above - using the local green space in conjunction with local mental health services. I'm arranging a conference around this subject and looking for good examples of new projects or strategic links. My telephone number is 07898870859 or email address michelle@lowco2.eu. Can you contact me directly so I can discuss this in more detail with you please?

Kind regards, Michelle Parker

As part of the Climate week and the NHS Sustainability Day we at Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Patnership Trust completed a drive to collect unused/old medical journals and newsletters, to either recycle or provide to a charity.

We managed to collect 525 journals and 220 newsletters from the doctors on site in Darford Kent. The plan is to roll it out across the trust and see what kind of a response we get.

The other outcome of this was that we identified that signing up for electronic versions of the journals would be more environment friendly. This information has now been dissipated and hopefully that should help. I for one have changed to the electronic versions now and stopped the paper copies.
