In April 2017 Dr Robin Chisman, Sustainability Fellow at the Severn Deanery, organised a Sustainability Day for FY2 trainees. This was a great opportunity for those who attended to hear about the interrelated nature of health and the environment, the wider concepts of sustainability and how to apply sustainability in practice.

Speakers from the North Bristol NHS Trust, the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare, the Sustainable Development Unit and the Royal College of General Practitioners covered topics such as: how Trusts view sustainability, how to communicate to others about the environment and health, how to do sustainable quality improvement and the Green Impact for Health initiative (a tool to improve the sustainability of General Practice).

Enabling healthcare professionals to understand the interconnectedness of the environment, health and healthcare and providing them with tools to act on that knowledge should be a routine part of education and training. This day was a great example of how this can be done.
