Congratulations to Dr Chantelle Rizan, Clinical Lecturer in Sustainable Healthcare at Brighton and Sussex Medical School and CSH Associate, who was recently conferred the title of PhD for her thesis 'Mitigating the carbon footprint of products used in surgical operations'.

Her PhD evaluated the carbon footprint of the most common surgical operations, and evaluated strategies for mitigation including switching from single-use items to reusables, optimising sterilisation of reusable instruments, optimising waste streams, and use of repair.

Chantelle is now building on this research, extending this to evaluate the role that servitisation may play in the transition to circular economy of healthcare products. She continues to translate her PhD research into practice and policy, as an academic advisor for a national Green Surgery Report, in collaboration with the UK Health Alliance on Climate Change and the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare.
