Sustainable mental health services will provide better outcomes for patients through prevention, empowerment, improving value and cutting carbon. We bring together people from across mental health and social care to share ideas and resources for sustainability.

Responsibility and waste; a waste of time?

The NHS is the economic and environmental equivalent of a leaky bucket. If we clinicians could broaden our sense of responsibility to minimizing waste in the services we work in, we could find money to spend on desperately needed staff shortages or services.

Sustainable mental health in action

The Guardian reports on how a website is helping those with mental illness rebuild their lives. This website is called  'Connect and Do'. It helps users to connect with other people, do something fun, and build relationships.

Sustainable models of care at CleanMed

The major event in September for me and others here at CSH was the annual CleanMed Europe Conference in Oxford. This was an event that looked at different aspects of sustainability in healthcare settings. It presented a real challenge to improving the sustainability of current healthcare models.

What does it look like?

Sustainability means many different things to many different people. Most people struggle to understand what it looks like. Prince Charles is big on it. Banks talk about it. Large multi-nationals put it in their branding, but what is it? Wikipedia says it is “the capacity to endure”. The question is, why are we in mental health interested in it?

Oxford trainee, Dr Daniel Maughan, appointed to RCPsych Research Fellowship in Sustainability 2013-15

The Royal College of Psychiatrists and CSH are delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Daniel Maughan to a two-year fellowship to improve the sustainability of mental health services. Beginning in August 2013, Dr Maughan will work under the supervision of CSH, the RCPsych and the University of Warwick to create a network of sustainability champions in mental health services, research innovations and new models of care and stimulate the adoption of sustainable practices in Mental Health Trusts around the country.
