Sustainable mental health services will provide better outcomes for patients through prevention, empowerment, improving value and cutting carbon. We bring together people from across mental health and social care to share ideas and resources for sustainability.

Choosing wisely

Clinical decisions are often complex. There are many factors to take into account and many pressures within the health care context that pull us in different ways. Worryingly, there is increasing evidence of a general overuse of tests, interventions and procedures. In the United States as much as 20% of money spent in health care brings no benefit to patients. I spent the last week in Amsterdam at a “Choosing Wisely’ roundtable event which discussed how best to engage doctors with this important issue.

“Environment, Society and Health”. The RCPsych Sustainability Summit.

You can now book your place at the RCPsych summit. This Summit will bring mental health professionals together from across the UK, who have an interest in sustainability. This Summit will discuss the future of mental health services in relation to the economic, environmental and social resources needed to maintain high quality services.

The busy month of March

This month saw three big events on three subsequent days. On the 26th March I gave the evening lecture at the new college premises. On the 27th March (this is NHS sustainability day!!) I launched the development of the RCPsych sustainability policy at the RCPsych council meeting. On the 28th March, I invited David Cameron and Sue Bailey to the Warneford Hospital in Oxford to launch the use of a green reovery space.
