Sustainable mental health services will provide better outcomes for patients through prevention, empowerment, improving value and cutting carbon. We bring together people from across mental health and social care to share ideas and resources for sustainability.

Sustainability of mental health services - survey request

The Royal College of Psychiatrists and the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare are joining up to try to improve the sustainability of mental health services across the UK. As a major component of this initiative we are asking all sustainability leads of mental health Trusts to complete a survey to find out about their sustainable practices. We are intending that this will be a useful tool for you as we will provide feedback and comparative data for you to know how your Trust compares against other Trusts. It will also be used to write a publication for the Health Services Journal.

Call for Case Studies

The Centre for Sustainable Healthcare has been commissioned to develop a report on waste in the NHS by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges. The report is intended to be high impact and demonstrate specific financial and environmental savings that could be achieved by the NHS through reducing waste in the system. The report will use and outline case studies throughout a variety of patient journeys which highlight different aspects of waste in the system such as wasted resources, procurement, staff time, low value interventions, inefficient processes etc.

Priorities

Question: What should our priority be as psychiatrists?

Answer: The mental health of our patients!

Unfortunately, it is not as simple as that! Questions such as ‘where does the responsibility for our patient’s mental health begin and end?’ and ‘what measures do we use to define mental health?’ begin to surface, alongside many more questions…

A Call for Mental Health Sustainability Representatives

The Centre for Sustainable Healthcare is working with the Royal College of Psychiatrists to develop a network of those interested in promoting sustainability in mental health services. Although Mental Health Susnet has been running for some time we are putting out a 'call for sustainability representatives' with an ambition to spread the network to every Trust across the UK.

Responsibility and waste; a waste of time?

The NHS is the economic and environmental equivalent of a leaky bucket. If we clinicians could broaden our sense of responsibility to minimizing waste in the services we work in, we could find money to spend on desperately needed staff shortages or services.

The Impact of Paper Procurement in the NHS.

The NHS has committed to reduce its carbon footprint but, aside from ensuring that legislative targets are reached, the benefits of decreasing greenhouse gas emissions are well documented. Yet the NHS faces increasing financial and service pressures; meaning that ‘green’ working is not always at the forefront of consideration. Many NHS organisations in England procure paper through the NHS Supply Chain Core Stationary list, which only contains paper produced from virgin (non-recycled) sources. As such, out of the 3.6 million reams of paper procured through NHS Supply Chain, only 29,000 were produced from recycled sources.
