Oxford SSM in Sustainable Healthcare - case study posted

Two final year medical students in Oxford took part in a two-week special study module (SSM) on “Sustainable Healthcare” in 2011-12. The students each chose to focus on one of the four dimensions of sustainable healthcare identified by the Sustainable Healthcare Education (SHE) Network, and undertook a related project.

Consultation on Health Workforce action on social determinants of health

The Institute of Health Equity (IHE) is consulting on a draft report exploring actions the Health Workforce can take to positively influence the social determinants of health and tackle health inequalities. Sustainable healthcare is not explicitly mentioned in the draft, and i wondered whether SHE Network members might be interested to respond to the consultation and recommend its inclusion?

Medical student reports on Whittington Hospital Green Week

Now that the much-feared medical finals are out the way, done and dusted, I have an opportunity to venture into pastures new and spend some time in the form of a Special Studies Module discovering what Sustainable Healthcare is all about. I seem to have timed my SSM just right (there’s a first time for everything!) to take in Climate Week! Whittington Hospital is marking the occasion with a Green Wards Competition, and I popped in to check out progress.

A new role for anaesthetists in environmentally sustainable healthcare?

Our article published today! "The contribution of anaesthesia to the environmental impact of healthcare is significant and visible, but amenable to change. We believe that this places anaesthetists in an ideal position to lead educational initiatives on environmental sustainability."

Keele case-based teaching resources

Keele University Medical School educators have developed their own cases based around four prominent types of waste within the NHS: food, pharmaceutical, clinical and fuel, which they have given permission to be shared though the SHE network to support sustainable healthcare education elsewhere.

Sharing advice about E-learning about environmental sustainability

There are many existing e-learning resources about environmental sustainability. It could be useful both for learners and for those planning courses if we can develop this list / 'catalogue' of e-resources.

If you have experience of using any of the below, or time to explore them, please add your comments - you can do so by logging in to the Sustainable Healthcare Education network, going to the 'wiki' tab, selecting this wiki, and then clicking on 'edit'.
