In 2019, the Welsh Environmental Anaesthetic Network (WEAN) launched "Project Drawdown" to encourage environmentally conscious anaesthetic practice in 8 hospitals around Wales, achieving an average reduction of 71% in carbon footprint from anaesthetic gases in the first year.
This project, which came about as part of CSH's Green Ward Competition held at Barts Health in 2019, reduced the unnecessary listing of patients for general anaesthetic in cataract surgery, saving time, money and carbon.
