Exciting things are happening in the word of sustainable primary care but your ideas and involvement are needed.  This is your place to connect with others taking forward a range of things including sustainable prescribing, fuel poverty initiatives and sustainability actions within the Royal College of General Practitioners.

Waiting Room Resources

I have recently established a display board for patients in my GP surgery waiting room explaining about Sustainability and its relevance to health. The display has ideas for how individuals can become more sustainable as well as healthier. It also has posters from local relevant community projects / groups.

NHS Sustainability Day- March 28th

The NHS Sustainability Day is on the 28th March 2012

Go to http://www.nhssustainabilityday.co.uk/index.html

Is there any way that you can get involved?

This website has so many ideas for making change towards Sustainability, some of which are easy and very achievable!

Carry out an energy survey in your organisation between now and Friday 23rd March. Use the simple survey downloadable HERE.

Every audit submitted will help to create a better picture of energy use in the NHS. It will highlight opportunities for making savings, which could be translated into patient services.

Climate Week 12th-18th March

It's Climate Week next week.  Find out more at http://www.climateweek.com.

This is deemed Britains biggest climate change campaign; inspiring a new wave of action towards a Sustainable future.

Has anyone got any plans for an event at their practice?  If so, can you let the network know how it goes?

If this is the first you've heard about it, it's not too late to download some of the resources and put together a display for a noticeboard in your patient waiting room.

How a GP phone call is reducing patient travel to surgery by 40% - the Patient Access method.

When a patient calls the surgery, the first response is for the GP to return the phone call.  They begin to deal with the problem straight away, and only 1 in 3 patients needs to come in to see the GP.

The time saved means more patients can be treated, and overall 40% fewer patients are making the trip to the surgery.

Already over 40 diverse practices run the service for 350,000 patients.

Say no to tat at Xmas!

Dear Sustainable Primary Care network colleagues,

It's that time of the year when we are all rushing around frantically buying and gathering things for the home; struggling to find presents which may or may not be appreciated.

As this is the most commercialized time of the year I thought it was a fitting time to send out a list of websites about companies/organisations which all promote Sustainability in one way or another and I hope they are helpful to you.  Although it’s not easy, and takes a bit more thought, I have been trying really hard to always consider the most eco-friendly, sustainable options in the choices I make.  Healthcare professionals have a powerful voice and we can lead by example and choose these more Sustainable options.  Over time hopefully culture will shift so that more and more people will follow our lead!
