New postgraduate module - Sustainable Healthcare Principles

The University of Brighton will be launching a new module in the next academic year called:

Sustainable Healthcare Principles

This module is open to all disciplines and can be taken as stand-alone credit for continuing professional development, or used as 20 credits within a course.  The module is available at Level 6 for students wanting to use within a Bachelor degree or at Level 7 for use within a Post Graduate Certificate, Post Graduate Diploma or Masters course.

The Semester 1 version will be classroom delivery (28 Nov-2 Dec 2022) at the University of Brighton Falmer campus (BN1 9PH).

The Semester 2 version will be online delivery on Microsoft Teams with dates to be confirmed (likely starting May 2023).

Taught content

  • Relevance of planetary health and the Sustainable Development Goals to healthcare systems
  • Climate justice, human rights and ethical issues related to planetary health and sustainable healthcare
  • Sustainable procurement of healthcare supplies
  • Principles of sustainable clinical practice:  prevention, patient empowerment and self-care, lean systems and low carbon alternatives
  • Energy use in healthcare
  • Circular economy and waste management in healthcare 
  • Specific considerations for sustainable healthcare: infection prevention, pharmaceuticals and specialist areas of practice
  • Sustainability and quality improvement in healthcare using the SusQI framework
