Myself and fellow Centre for Sustainable Healthcare (CSH) Sustainability fellow Darshini Ramasubbu and our CSH colleague Brett Duane (Associate Professor in Dental Public Health, Trinity College Dublin) attended the European Dental Students Association (EDSA) 61st annual conference held in Amsterdam this year at the Academic Centre for Dentistry (ACTA).

The EDSA represents the voice of more than 70000 dental students from 182 dental schools in 30 different countries Europe-wide and this year’sconference had over 200 members participating in a variety of discussions, workshops and lectures.

We were given the opportunity to present a lecture on ‘Sustainability in Dentistry’ followed by a panel discussion we hosted to discuss and answer delegates’ questions on the topic.

It was positively received with plenty of questions from delegates who said the lecture had ‘opened their eyes’ to the issue, particularly in how environmental sustainability relates to healthcare and Dentistry. There were interesting discussions relating to the need to incorporate education in sustainability into the undergraduate curriculum and how students can approach their institutions regarding this.

Many of the delegates spoke to us who were interested in learning more about Sustainability and carrying out research projects. We shared resources and information including the Dental Susnet network and our upcoming ‘Managing Sustainability in Dentistry’ conference on the 29thJune in London. Link to the event here:

We hope that we have made a positive contribution to the awareness of all delegates who attended, and we look forward to collaborating with the EDSA in the future to positively influence the profession with regard to achieving environmentally sustainable dentistry.
