Course Description

Health professions curricula increasingly require students and trainees to demonstrate skills for both sustainable healthcare and quality improvement. At the same time, achieving the NHS commitment to net zero carbon emissions by 2040 requires healthcare staff to introduce changes in the workplace and innovate for further carbon reductions.

This short course uses the ‘SusQI’ framework, developed by CSH, to help health professions educators and students to integrate sustainability concepts into mainstream quality improvement teaching. It meets curriculum requirements while also responding to growing concern about the need for the health sector to respond to the climate and ecological emergency, and lead by example.  The course is equally applicable to all health professions and to the undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Learning outcomes:

  1. Understand the steps for integrating sustainability into Quality Improvement – defining the problem/ setting goals, studying the system, designing the improvement effort and measuring impacts using the triple bottom line;  
  2. Develop skills in applying the SusQI framework to Quality Improvement education; Integrate concepts of sustainable healthcare with recognised Quality Improvement methodologies;
  3. Explore how SusQI teaching can be designed to provide the best possible learning opportunity and increase learners’ motivation for healthcare improvement; Identify examples of student-led Sustainable Quality Improvement projects of value in your teaching context;
  4. Learn from SusQI teaching case studies including student-led Quality Improvement projects that have successfully applied the SusQI framework; Develop effective assessment of student learning; 
  5. Have the opportunity to network with like-minded educators and have open access to a range of supportive SusQI educational resources.
