The General Medical Council (GMC) has welcomed recommendations from the Sustainable Healthcare Education (SHE) Network on priority learning outcomes for sustainable healthcare.

At a meeting in September 2011, the SHE Network was invited to develop recommendations for consideration by the GMC - with reference to all educational levels, from undergraduate to continuing professional development.

A curriculum working group was formed and the final recommendations ("Sustainable Healthcare Priority Learning Outcomes") were submitted earlier this month.

The learning outcomes are intended to bring a ‘systems’ perspective to many competencies which are already found in various aspects of medical training. They involve four key areas of medical practice:

  • Preventative healthcare
  • Clinical practice
  • Management
  • Leadership and advocacy

The SHE Network approach proposes to spiral learning through undergraduate training, postgraduate training and CPD, such that some concepts are addressed with increasing complexity at higher levels of training.

The initial response from the GMC has been positive, and the SHE Network will now be looking to take the work forward, possibly beginning with a formal consultation across medical schools and Royal Colleges as well as the NHS. SHE Network members will shortly be invited to join a teleconference in February/March at which follow up plans will be discussed.
