Sustainability in Imaging

Are there any other individuals or radiology departments out there who are working on making imaging more sustainable?  We would be really interested in hearing any ideas or experiences, or to share ours (so far).

Hi Sarah

You might be aware of this recent publication, but if not, will be of interest to you:

Thanks Heather.
Any efforts in Diagnostic Radiology that you are aware of? We need to change from volume centered imaging to efficient, sustainable imaging. Is there anyone working on this? Could we set up a project? Thanks, b

I am a neuroradiologist, becoming ever so worried about the unsustainibility of imaging in universal heath care systems, and about the low impact of our work on outcomes, and the increasing impact on climate change.
Anybody there to share, propose or join efforts? Very much appreciated, beatriz

Hi everyone, it is very nice to see that others are worried about this too. We are running a project at the moment (at The Christie in Manchester) to estimate the carbon footprint of the radiotherapy pathway which also includes some imaging (CT, CBCT and maybe MR). The hope is that this will enable us to find the "hotspots" within the pathway so that we can reduce the footprint of those parts first.

A paper that is really interesting on this topic is this one by Heye: The Energy Consumption of Radiology: Energy- and Cost-saving Opportunities for CT and MRI Operation | Radiology (rsna.org)

I hope that helps,

Rob
