The Campaign for Greener Healthcare is delighted to welcome Dr Andrew Connor to his new post as "Green Nephrology Fellow". Andrew is a specialist trainee in kidney medicine and takes up the fellowship today (September 1st), generously funded by NHS Kidney Care. Over the next year, he will be exploring the environmental impacts of kidney care and working with NHS staff and patients to improve practice in kidney units.
Andrew will continue to do one session a week of clinical work in the renal unit of Dorset County Hospital, where he has spent the last year as a specialist registrar. He is looking forward to the challenges of the year ahead, in his words:
"It is clear to me that the scale of carbon reduction needed to limit the effects of global warming cannot be achieved without the health sector playing its part. Over recent years I have become increasingly committed to incorporating environmental sustainability into my daily life. The challenge of translating this ethos into the context of the provision of high quality clinical care is both exciting and important."
The post is linked to the wider Green Nephrology programme, which has brought together NHS staff, patients and suppliers behind a commitment to improving the sustainability of kidney services. It is supported by NHS Kidney Care, with help from the professional bodies - the British Renal Society and the Renal Association.
It is also linked to Warwick University, where Andrew will be undertaking a Masters degree.
