Congratulations to Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals Trust who have been shortlisted in the Surgical Nursing category of the Nursing Times Awards in recognition of their work to improve sustainability in operating theatres.

Their entry focused on the high level of carbon emissions and greenhouse gases operating theatres produce and showed how simple, manageable and free steps can lower emissions, save money and boost staff morale by being part of a sustainability drive. They also featured ideas such as using biodegradable waste bins and re-useable sharps bins, streamlining surgical sets and educating staff members about the environmental impact of their work.

BSUH’s entry was noted as the first ever 'nomination for the Planet', and the panel commented on the clear passion for sustainability shown by the staff, who hope that winning the award will help them to gain investment for their department (Main Theatres, Royal Sussex County Hospital) for further sustainable actions, such as automatic taps and sensor lights, as well highlighting the need for sustainability to be addressed by new innovations and progression in healthcare.

They will find out if they have won at the Nursing Times award at a ceremony on 2nd November at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London.

We unfortunately didn't win this award but the nomination has certainly stirred up a lot of interest. Thank you to everyone for your support and please know, we shall be continuing our sustainable practice and hopefully using other platforms to teach others what we have learned.
