Andrea MacNeill, Principle Investigator, Green-Op

Andrea is surgical resident from Canada and is currently working towards an MSc in Environmental Change & Management at the University of Oxford. As one of the co-founders of the Sustainable Operating Network, she is perhaps doing some of its most interesting work…

In the current climate of severe budgetary constraints, health systems and institutions stand to benefit from measures that streamline operations and eliminate unnecessary waste. As the founder and principal investigator of the Green-Op programme, Andrea is currently developing a surgical foot-printing tool to facilitate the comparative evaluation of surgical practice in the USA, Canada and UK.

Her programme, a collaboration between the University of Oxford (UK) and the University of British Columbia (Canada), aims to quantify the environmental footprint of operating theatres with respect to emissions, energy consumption, waste generation, and the surgical supply chain. Thus identifying targets for considerable cost savings to hospitals and healthcare systems and giving benefit to both human and environmental health.
