The healthcare sector has a considerable impact on the environment. It has been estimated that the greenhouse gas emissions caused by the NHS are 22.8 million tonnes of CO2e per year. Moreover, the provision of healthcare contributes to air and water pollution. To reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050 in line with UK government targets, every organisation and specialty will have to play its part.
Sustainability Day is a national day of action across the health sector. Each year NHS Trusts, Clinical Commissioning Groups, Hospitals and organisations take action to highlight the important role sustainable development can play in health service delivery.
