RCSLT Professional Development Framework 2023

I've just attended an RCSLT webinar about the new SLT professional development framework an thought i'd share some bits from it.

This framework contains five core components. One of these core components is practitioner wellbeing, and it's one of the first professional frameworks to consider and include wellbeing in this way.

Another core component is sustainability (on p.15)! RCSLT reminds us:

"As individuals and a profession, our aspirations include to:

- Invest in processes to support sustainability

- Lower our carbon footprint (RCSLT, 2022)"

The framework goes on to reference the WHO SDGs and then asks us some questions. The idea is that we use these questions to reflect on our practice. There is no target or logged score, only self-reflection. The questions are introduced and as below:

"Think about the definition of sustainability and the UN goals that are relevant to your workplace. In relation to your own current knowledge and experience, consider the following:

- What does sustainability at work look like for you?

- What is within your control to keep doing?

- What is within your control to improve or start doing?

- What is within your control to stop doing?"

The Framework is designed to help us explore and reflect on your whole career, and it's really up to you as an individual to define and shape what a great career looks like. It's really great to see sustainability as a core component flowing through everyone's career journey, whether we're an expert generalist or novice specialist. There is no 'right' or 'wrong' way to complete or use the framework, but it's the questions and reflections that the document will engender which will support us as we continue our lifelong learning.

Sometimes the Framework will ask us questions that we might not understand or be able to answer. This means we can then go off and try to find out what we think about the question or topic posed. If you're reading this blog and you're not sure how to answer these questions, then perhaps you've already started to meander along your sustainability learning journey, and if you're new to the CSH, welcome! The CSH has plenty of resources and information on greening your practice, and the SLT network has posted lots of nice signposting and information it's blog and twitter page (@SLTSusnet).

You can access the framework online from the RCSLT website: https://www.rcslt.org/learning/professional-development-framework/
