Surgical set rationalisation

NHSE working with the Health Innovation North West Coast and Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust have developed a reproducible process for hospitals to rationalise surgical sets, reducing carbon intensive sterilisation of unused instruments. There is evidence that >75% instruments may remain unused per procedure, which results in unnecessary washing and sterilisation of high volumes of items. Surgical set rationalisation has been identified as a key intervention by the Royal College of Surgeons’ (RCS) Intercollegiate Green Theatre Checklist, and the Leeds example is projected to annually save 2-3 tonnes CO2e or 60% and £20k from the decontamination process for one procedural area.

The accompanying 'Heatmap Tool' helps to streamline the auditing process by first helping to standardise instrument names across different setups ahead of data collection and be used to submit results. The resulting Usage Heatmap can be used to facilitate discussions around how to streamline the final tray setup. We'd love to hear if you have made use of these resources and any recommendations for improvements. You can find the tool here: https://future.nhs.uk/CCF_Hub/view?objectID=182287557
