Join clinicians, researchers, educators and students interested in reducing the carbon footprint of physiotherapy and harnessing our services to reach a 'net zero carbon' health service. This network will allow us to share ideas and resources for socially and environmentally responsible physiotherapy. We are working in collaboration with the Environmental Physiotherapy Association
How we started
The first ever UK Physiotherapy group dedicated to sustainability and health was formed in February 2021, as PhysioSusnet. The group was founded by Alfie Devine-Wright, Peter May and Jessica King in response to a call from Ben Whittaker, then of the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare (CSH), for a network of sustainable physiotherapists. The creation of the network was in response to our planetary ecological emergency, as a means for sharing ideas and resources for a socially and environmentally responsible Physiotherapy.
The network was also formed with a sense of opportunity, due to the potential for physiotherapy to lead in the drive for a ‘net-zero carbon’ health service. As a low carbon and holistic profession, that promotes active transport and physical activity, Physiotherapy is well-positioned to make health and social care systems more sustainable. We have collaborated with the Environmental Physiotherapy Association, expanded through social media accounts and built a diverse and dedicated group of clinicians, researchers, students and educators. Nevertheless ‘Physiotherapy’ and ‘Sustainability’ are only recently being combined, with much awareness and collaboration still to come. We hope you can join in the exciting next chapter of this journey.
