We are writing to ask for your help with two research studies which aim to gain insights into the breakdown, repair and lifecycle of prosthetic limbs in the UK.
- Study 1: Exploring experiences of breakdown and the repair of prosthetic limbs
- Study 2: Sustainable futures for prosthetic limbs - perspectives on the lifecycle and afterlife of a prosthesis
We are seeking views from anyone with experience of upper and lower limb prosthetics. This may include: Prosthesis users, caregivers, healthcare professionals, manufacturers or other similar background.
Study 1: Exploring experiences of breakdown and the repair of prosthetic limbs
We are looking for research participants to share their experiences or knowledge of repair and maintenance services for upper and lower limb prosthetics in the UK. We want to know more about:
- Your views on why prosthetic limbs break down
- What impact it has when a limb breaks down
- What it’s like for users accessing repair and maintenance support in the UK
- Experiences accessing repair services – are they positive, or negative?
- What it’s like for clinicians or manufacturers providing repair and maintenance services
- Your views on how services could be improved.

Study 2: Sustainable futures for prosthetic limbs - perspectives on the lifecycle and afterlife of a prosthesis
We’re looking for people to help us improve our current understanding of the lifecycle and disposal practices of prosthetic limbs. We are seeking views regarding what happens to a limb when it comes to the end of its lifecycle?
- Are they kept, returned, retrieved, recycled, donated, buried or cremated?

Combined discussion: If you have views on both topics and would like to discuss aspects from both studies (i.e. breakdown, repair, sustainability and the prosthesis lifecycle), a combined discussion can be arranged. Please e-mail for further information.
