Pharmacy SusNet Online Event: Optimising Deprescribing in Structured Medication Reviews

Nuala Hampson

Prescriptions form 60% of the NHS primary care’s carbon footprint. Overprescribing and polypharmacy are common, and worsen quality of care. Appropriate deprescribing is not harmful, can reduce falls, admissions, and improve quality of life whilst simultaneously reducing water pollution and saving money.

Dr Nadja van Ginneken, GP and Sustainability Lead, and Charlotte Condemine, Network Pharmacist at Liverpool PCN will present how they worked with the network pharmacy team to conduct a simple intervention during pharmacist-led structured medication reviews (SMRs) to strengthen the focus on deprescribing in patients on >10 medications, resulting in reduced prescribing and cost and carbon savings.
