Jennifer Nixon • 23 April 2024

Dr Sarah Benn, who was arrested and imprisoned for holding a placard outside an oil refinery, was found guilty of professional misconduct by the GMC. She will find out whether she is to be struck off on the 23rd April. She is the first of several doctors facing GMC tribunals so what happens to her sets an important precedent.

There has been widespread outrage at the punishment of doctors, nurses and other health care professionals protesting for action on climate change by professional regulators, including from UN Special Rapporteur for Environmental Defenders. Statement from UN Special Rapporteur Michel Forst - Lawyers Are Responsible (lar.earth)

For information - The decision has come through - Sraha has been suspended for 5 months with a review at the end to see if she has engaged in ' misconduct' again - which she almost certainly will have done as she is committed to climate action. It is still important people are aware even after the decision as there will be push back on this. The BMJ have already come out strongly in support of Sarah. There are further doctors up in front of tribunals later this year so the precedent and the public response is really important, particularly as their decision is based on the view that her actions undermine public trust in the profession. They presented no evidence for this and a strong push back could demonstrate that the opposite is true. To maintain trust we need to take a stand on what is the most important health issue of our time
