The occupational therapy manager for the Orchard Inpatient Unit and other mental health staff run a walking group for their admitted patients. This group was started due to the benefits of physical activity and walking, which include social inclusion and enhanced well-being. For those who are able, the group meets once per week for a 5.5 mile walk and usually goes to a local landmark and has coffee. There are other shorter walks available to patients during the week. Staff has noted clinical and social outcomes such as increased fitness, social inclusion, and a positive mood amongst participants. This also increases value in green spaces.
