An interesting podcast about pharmacy and its environmental impact, as well as how we can make a difference within pharmacy. Some key points within the podcast:
- Medicines make up 25% of the NHS carbon footprint
- What contributes to the high carbon footprint/environmental impact of pharmacy? Industrial processing in far away locations, shipping to other far away locations, packaging and delivering as well as anaesthetic gases and CFCs in inhalers
- What can we do to decrease this environmental impact? Use less polluting anaesthetics, move away from MDI inhalers, promoting recycling of packaging and proper disposal of medicines, as well as ensuring that patients are well away of how to take medicines properly (duration etc.)
