This case study was completed as part of the Hywel Dda University Health Board Green Team Competition from September 2022-January 2023 by the Endoscopy Team.

Setting/Patient Group: Endoscopy Unit
Issue to be Addressed:
Inappropriate use of single-use patient transfer sheets in one Endoscopy unit, contributing to environmental waste and costs.
Intervention:
- Encourage staff to conduct manual handling assessments for each patient to determine the necessity of slide sheet use.
- Explore and gather data on reusable alternatives for continued required use.
Outcome:
Clinical
- No negative impact to patients
Social
- Upholding patient independence throughout the Endoscopy journey.
- Fostering a mindset shift among staff towards sustainable practices.
Environmental
- Estimated annual carbon savings of 3,726 kgCO2e
Economic
- Estimated annual savings of £2,160 through estimated 90% reduction of single-use transfer sheet procurement.
Key Learning Point:
The project facilitated valuable connections across the organization that will support the ongoing Green Health agenda and enable a positive shift in staff mindset towards environmental considerations.
