Rachel McLean
Rachel McLean • 30 June 2023

SusQI project completed as part of Gloucestershire Hospital NHS FT Green Team Competition 2022 by the Gloucestershire Managed Services Team.

Team members

  • Marc Thom, Porter Coordinator
  • Corinne Always, Waste Manager
  • Neraaj Arora, Assistant Catering Manager
  • Bridget Hooper, Catering Manager

Aims:

  1. To study the current food waste disposal system, and identify what changes are needed in preparation for food waste recycling
  2. To measure prospective savings from implementation of food waste recycling

Results

The team reviewed their current process and evaluated changes that would be required to implement food waste recycling. The Trust will be running a pilot scheme for recycling in 2023, where food waste will be taken for anaerobic digestion.

Potential impact:

From redirecting 2,405.16kg of uneaten meals (from inpatient wards only) from energy from waste to anaerobic digestion disposal, we anticipate an annual financial saving of £72.80 and carbon saving of 393.23 kgCO2e per year, equivalent to driving 1,132.6 miles in an average car.

Social impact: positive feedback was received from staff and patients, e.g.,

“I think the recycling of the hospital food waste is an excellent idea, it will reduce the hospitals carbon footprint and make everyone involved more aware of what they are throwing away”
