Winner of Green Team Competition!

Patients when diagnosed with head and neck cancers, require treatment of  chemotherapy and radiotherapy often resulting in mucositis, a debilitating side effect which means patients require treatment  including analgesia, supplementary feeding, and antiobiotic therapy. Often patients need hospital admission for managemen of these symptoms.

Photobiomodulation (PBM) involves the application of a light source to prevent mucositis & promote healing.  A quick and simple intervention, PBM was trialed at The Christie Foundation Trust with fantastic results!  The Palliative & Supportive Care team demonstrated significant reductions in symptoms, medication requirements, hospital admissions, in addition to significant improvement in cost and carbon emissions - projected to be around £530,640.36 and 42,774 kgCO2e per year-  equivalent to 123,197 miles driven in an average car!

Our team now plan to incorporate PBM into treatment protocols for this patient group.
