Book chapter

Health systems are significant contributors to carbon emissions, and the effects of climate change negatively impact human health. The chapter outlines the role of healthcare providers in identifying innovative strategies and mitigation activities against climate change. It also discusses the symbiotic relationship between quality improvement (QI) and sustainability in healthcare. The ‘cost’ of delivering healthcare is explored in relation to the economic, social, and environmental impacts—a triple bottom line. The Sustainability in Quality Improvement (SusQI) framework provides a guideline on how to approach sustainable QI in a project. Advice on how to calculate the carbon footprint of a change project is also provided. High-value intervention ideas for sustainable QI are discussed through a series of case studies. Practical advice and tips are outlined on how to incorporate sustainability into day-to-day work and project design.
