10:10 Monthly Theme for December - Giving

There are growing opportunities for green gifts - check out my ideas below.

  • Instead of throwing away your surplus medical supplies and equipment why not donate it to Healthcare Link, a not-for-profit, community investment organisation which recovers and redistributes surplus medical supplies and equipment, with a dedication to a three-fold mission of environmental stewardship, job opportunity creation for the marginalised, and improving health in Africa.
  • Although not focused solely on the environment The English Surgeon film does highlight a shocking example of waste in the NHS.  The star of the film, Henry Marsh, explains that in his hospital in the UK they spend £40,000 pa on drill bits used in neuro-surgery (each drill bit costs £80 each).  In the UK each drill bit is thrown away after use whereas in the Ukraine the surgeon has used the same drill bit for 10 years.
  • Buy your 10:10 tags, large tags and stickers at the 10:10 store
  • 10:10 e-cards are a great way to send Christmas greetings. They’re quick, fun and carbon-saving – and they will get there by Christmas day!  Why not send the e-card to your friends and family and make adonation to 10:10 with the money you save.  More details here.
  • Not carbon offsetting but to compliment your efforts to cut carbon emissions you might like to buy some carbon emission permits from the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme via Sandbag.  The permits are purchased and cancelled on your behalf by Sandbag which reduces the overall cap on emissions in the EU.
  • Although not live at the time of writing you will soon be able to buy a tree for the NHS Forest.   The plan is to plant 1.3 million trees - one for every employee in the NHS.

Thank you all for your commitment to 10:10 in 2010.  It has been an amazing year and we look forward to gathering the results of your efforts over the coming months.

Have a very merry Christmas and happy a low carbon new year!

Best wishes

Tim
