BCHC Paediatric SLT sustainability project - help needed for more sustainable PPE/equipment & reducing plastics!

Hi everyone

We are a small group from Birmingham Community Healthcare Paediatric SLT team who have started a project to look at simple steps in making SLT care sustainable and more in line with the Greener NHS policy.

As part of this we hope to source more sustainable PPE   / equipment and reduce use of (single use) plastics.
We wondered if anyone is in a similar team and has any experiences or genral ideas they could share with us - all tips and pointers gratefully received!

We are hoping to establish some network links, as we are very new to this area.

Hello! Brilliant to hear about your project to source more sustainable PPE and equipment and reduce use of plastics!

If you would like please come to our next networking event which is on October 6th at 7pm via Eventbrite Sustainable Speech and Language Therapy-Online Networking Event 2. (I will post a linke asap). There may be other SLT's there who can share what they are doing and help you get your project started.

Hi Rebecca, Maira and Meghna,

I have a background in SLT but now work at CSH - I have been working with an infection control team who have targetted reduction in PPE use through an education campaign to staff on when PPE is or is not required - you may have already done so, but it might be useful to speak with your IPC team and clarify if there is any PPE you can reduce use of in the first place as well as looking at reusables. The case study report for this project will be available on our website from Monday 24th October if you think it would be of use to you =)

You may also find some helpful resources for planning and implementing a Sustainable Quality Improvent project here: Step-by-step guide | Centre for Sustainab (susqi.org).

I'd be interested to hear what other equipment you are looking to reduce. As Tallie has commented already, we would love for you to join our next SLT networking event on December 6th at 7pm! There may be others doing similar work.

Hope to see you in December,

Rachel

Hi Rachel,

I'd really like to read the case study from this PPE project - would you be able to point me to where I can find it on the website?

Thanks,

Emily

Thanks for sharing - this is so interesting that they managed to do this in an acute setting post covid - having this info is a very useful refernce point for being able to start this conversation up again.
