The British Thoracic Society (BTS) recently published a "Position Statement on Sustainability and the Environment: Climate Change and Lung Health". The BTS explains that this statement "...sets out the Society’s stance on how the impact of climate change and the carbon footprint of respiratory healthcare can be assessed, reduced and mitigated".
It details aspects of climate and environmental change that the BTS is particularly concerned about, and identifies actions that the BTS, organisations, and individual healthcare professionals can take. It also commits to incorporating sustainability into its educational programmes and materials, including my personal highlight, committing "to include a statement on climate change and lung health in all new statements and guidelines produced by the Society".
We all know we need to make sustainable healthcare part of normal practice. The BTS statement demonstrates that respiratory healthcare leaders, and the respiratory community as a whole, have now recognised this, and are committed to making it happen.
