New research from the Just Economics report for London has found the NHS and other government services would save £4 billion if delivery companies switched to using cargo bikes for the first and last mile of deliveries.
This is a great move forward, even though deliveries by bike is not a new thing, ie post workers/ grocery delivery cyclists etc, but it updates an old idea that works.
I wonder if community nursing was more locally organised we could be doing the same… I hate having to drive miles back and forth to see my patients in a car, and I know that my car use is responsible for some of my patients COPD/ Respiratory problems.
District nurses used bicycles in the past too, why I wonder can’t we return to this concept.
I know the answer is too few nurses covering large areas of neighbourhoods, but smaller cells of care within larger communities, ie based locally rather than centrally could be a way forward.
When I worked in Suffolk they had EV’s and where my partner does they also have them.
Alas our Trust doesn’t seem interested in trying…. I think that their being net zero doesn’t include our vehicle use, they I suppose ‘greenwash’ by its being part of our personal carbon footprint!

Some areas are also trialling electric vehicles for community nurses: https://www.northerncarealliance.nhs.uk/news/nca-news/community-care-tr….

This article is from two years ago - same company delivering chemo using pedal power! Clearly they are going from strength to strength!
