To demonstrate that going green can be fun Team Greener Healthcare took part in the fantastically eccentric Brompton World Championship event at Blenheim Palace on 4th October. Wearing Fairtrade gleaming white coats supplied by OMCC The Organic Medical Clothing Company the team drew lots of attention. Dr Frances Mortimer and Tim Nicholson were representing the Campaign for Greener Healthcare and Dr Mahmood Bhutta the British Medical Association Medical Fair and Ethical Trade Group.

As well as having a great time the team were keen to promote the co-benefits of an active lifestyle, good for your health and good for the planet, plus the importance of buying ethically and fairly traded products in the health service. More information is available on the Campaign for Greener Healthcare here www.greenerhealthcare.org and the Medical Fair and Ethical Trade Group here www.fairmedtrade.org.uk

Some 600 entrants participated in the Brompton World Championship event which comprised a race over two laps of a 6.5km course. To add to the fun, all the entrants had to wear a suit jacket, shirt with a collar and tie. The race started with a ‘Le Man’s’ style start with all the bikes folded up on a grid – competitors had to run to their bikes, unfold them and speed off onto the course. The Brompton race was part of the much larger Bike Blenheim Place event that took place over the whole day. The grounds of Blenheim Palace were opened up to bikes galore with a road race, time trials, cyclo-cross race, leisure rides and the Brompton World Championship.

As for the results, Mahmood and Tim achieved respectable times of 27 and 28 minutes whilst Frances did extremely well coming 4th amongst the women with a time of 28 minutes despite stopping to assess a casualty on the way!

OMCC The Organic Medical Clothing Company are the first to offer ethically, responsibly and sustainably sourced Fairtrade cotton products to the NHS and the medical industry. More details are available at www.omcc.org.uk.
