Gadolinium and the environment

You may already be aware, but recent evidence has documented gadolinium (likely healthcare related) is ending up in our water, including rivers and oceans, as well as impacting animal development. This is in addition to the deposition in human tissues that is of unclear consequence.

Clearly contrast-enhanced MR can be necessary for patient care, but is it always needed when used? Are your MR protocols reflective of recent advances in technology and evidence? Can you reduce your contrast use without affecting care adversely?

I'm an MSK radiologist, and am about to start looking through ours as I think there are opportunities for us a group to rationalise contrast use. Others have done similar work in the past, but it might be an opportune time for you to act locally. Happy to discuss the fruits of our efforts too, to share the learning!
