One of the big challenges for making a just transition in the food system is the high cost and lack of accessibility to healthy, sustainable choices. As the FoodSEqual website explains at least 22% of people in the UK are in food poverty and the cost of living crisis has exacerbated this situation.
I am interested in the Food and Nutrition Susnet's thoughts on what people think are the key barriers. For example - Are food banks the most effective way to help people? Do they take away business from the few community focused stores that might be near them in so-called food deserts? Are foodbanks places that people might feel uncomfortable visiting? Should there be policies on what they can hand out e.g. processed foods, meats, dairy, low fibre cereals? How can perishable foods be made available if they are more likely to enter the waste stream? Should people simply get vouchers or cash to be used at existing, partner businesses that stock good food?
