On 29th January 2014 the Sustainable Development Unit (SDU) launched the new sustainable development strategy for the health, public health and social care sector for 2014 - 2020. It describes the vision for a sustainable health and care system by reducing carbon emissions, protecting natural resources, preparing communities for extreme weather events and promoting healthy lifestyles and environments.

The strategy is the first to be produced for the whole health and care system, including the NHS, public health and social care. It outlines three goals:

  • To contribute ot a healthier environment.
  • To strengthen communities and services that they are ready and resilient for changing times and climates.
  • To take every opportunity to contribute to healthy lives, healthy communities and healthy environments.

To support the delivery of the strategy's vision and the goals five modules have been developed and three more are in the process of being created:

  • Leadership, engagement and empowerment
  • Sustainable clinical and care models
  • Healthy, sustainable and resilient communities
  • Carbon hotspots
  • Commissioning and procurement
