This is the second year of the sustainable ophthalmology prize at the Annual Congress of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. Seventy-three clinical teams entered of whom 15 have been shortlisted.
The final fifteen will be judged over the coming three days on their importance and originality but also on their likely financial, social and environmental impact, the triple bottom line.
A broad range of topics covering all the principles of sustainable clinical practice are showcased. For example,
- prevention is represented by genetic tests for inherited retinal disease and virtual screening for hydroxychloroquine retinal toxicity.
- Patient centred care by comparing different preservative free bottle systems and novel patient records for patients with age related macular degeneration.
- Lean care by virtual glaucoma monitoring units, android tablet screening for visual impairment in stroke survivors and
- low carbon care by intravitreal steroid implants, a novel ophthalmoscope and a home microsurgical simulation kit.
We are looking forward to announcing the winner on Wednesday!
