Patient information leaflet / education pack on sustainable kidney care

Hi all,

Has anyone developed an education pack / poster / leaflet for patients on sustainable kidney care? We are trying to encourage our patients to bring their own blankets (and mugs!) to dialysis, so we want to design a poster and a link to an easy-to-read resource that units can share with their patients so patients can understand why we are doing this project and also have their views heard.

If you have developed something similar, please get in touch. It would be useful to see what has worked / not worked!

Not that I personally know of. But patients like myself and Andy Williamson advocate on the forums, and social media groups and have been for some years.

The NKF has a section, but not sure if they've produced media, other than the info as a downloadable PDF.

One of the biggest frustrations is pill packets. Superdrug only take small amounts, basically the same size as 'battery towers' in other shops. And only in selected branches.

https://help.uk.terracycle.com/hc/en-gb/articles/8369874017677-How-can-… this could in effect be set up in units, or backed by KPAs

I'm pretty sure one of the supermarkets was/but has stopped taking used blister packs.

I recycle most of the bulk cardboard, but don't separated the wrappings from on/off dialysis packs. The fact that a home dialysis patients stock is made in up to 7 different countries (at least, I counted) even if distributed by Fresenius means wrappers are unlikely to be the same!

I also recycle the reject water from the RO in the summer, its fine for the garden. (I think that made it into the NKF's info.)

This would certainly be something to take to the NKF/BKPA and the local KPA's.

There's been a lot of info going out for patients on reducing costs of living/ cooking tips/food waste, access to Food Co ops/zero waste stores and swap/share clothes. Particularly for patients on low incomes these have been useful, if not essential. Especially during Covid.

So any new material could certainly be linked..

Hope this is useful

James
