The winner of the 2012 Green Nephrology Awards (to be announced at next week's Summit) will receive a £500 prize to invest in green initiatives. The prize, donated by a supporter and topped up with match funding from the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare, is to be awarded to the kidney unit submitting the best green project.
The judges - Beverley Matthews of NHS Kidney Care, patient Chris Stait and former Green Nephrology Fellow, Andy Connor - are looking for projects which demonstrate a measurable benefit to the environmental sustainability of kidney care, but which also offer additional benefits such as improved patient experience or financial savings. Further credit is given for entries that highlight information to assist other organisations to implement similar changes.
The winning unit will be presented with the Award certificate and £500 prize at the Green Nephrology Summit on 26th September. The Green Nephrology programme will follow up in a year's time to see how the money has been used and share their experience.
All the shortlisted entries will also feature in a special edition of Kidney Care Matters as well as being displayed in a poster exhibition at the Summit and entered into the Green Nephrology online case library.
Mr Stait said "They are all great reads and if all 80-odd renal units did all of these, the result would be magic".
The Awards are run by the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare in partnership with NHS Kidney Care. They are now closed to entries in 2012.
