Hi all,
I'm Amy, an anaesthetist and clinical lead for sustainability for my trust. Our infant feeding team and myself are looking to start a project looking at reducing single use infant feeding bottles. Has anyone done something similar already please? I believe Greenwich and Lewisham have but I have no contacts there to get in touch to find out more! Our main question currently is - does anyone sterilise the single use bottles and use them as single patient use rather than single use please?Â
Many Thanks
Hi Amy, this project might be useful to look at: https://networks.sustainablehealthcare.org.uk/resources/greener-feeding…
Hi Amy, I'm Jo and the PDM at Lewisham and Greenwich, I've been involved with the reduction in single use bottles. We have sterilising equipment available to new parents either for formula or EBM and invite them to bring their own bottles from home (generally all of which have a slower flow rate through the teat so reduces overfeeding and reflux etc). This allows opportunity for education on safe sterilisation.
We have received written information from the manufacturer that the single use bottles we procure are suitable for short term sterilisation - single patient rather than single use, but until they change the packaging to reflect this, we can't get it signed off for IPC reasons.
The project is currently on hold as we haven't had a full infant feeding team, but a recent appointment means this should hopefully pick back up in the next couple of months.
