Robotic Surgery

I would like to hear from anyone in surgery looking at the disposability in robotic surgery?  I am a gynaecology trainee and I am aware of the huge carbon footprint associated with robotic hysterectomy compared to other methods.  I was shocked each plastic drape arm contains a micro-chip which is disposed of after each case.  I'd be interested to know if anyone is working on this?  amy.manning9@nhs.net

I'm also interested in this. The Da vinci system like a lot of other devices I feel is designed so that there is a continued need for purchase of consumables. I know that the instruments are chipped and this logs the number of uses they can be put through before replacement. The drapes have a mechanical plastic interface for the control arms, which one could argue is there to encourage use of the manufactures drape. But I wasn't aware of a chip, do you have a source?
