This course is an overview of the relationship between the health sector and the climate and ecological crises; How does the health system contribute to climate change? How can clinical practices become sustainable?

The course consists of two parts:

In order for the NHS to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2040, and net zero within its supply chain by 2045, carbon needs to become an additional currency alongside money, understood by all working in the health system.  Though we know the NHS’s carbon footprint overall, the carbon impact of specific projects and operations (service changes, quality improvement projects or procurement of new products) are not routinely measured.  

Wednesday 24th February 2021

Sustainability has been recognised by the Royal College of Physicians as a domain of quality in healthcare, extending the responsibility of health services to patients not just of today but of the future. As a domain of quality, it follows that sustainability should be explicitly addressed as part of ‘quality improvement’ activities. But how?

Sustainable Healthcare Academic Research and Enterprise


This conference will present contemporary research, audit, quality improvement or education projects about sustainable healthcare.

We extend an invitation to academic and clinical colleagues from a wide range of disciplines who are engaged in sustainability to submit an abstract for an oral or poster presentation.
