OPPORTUNITY! Green link with quality improvement fellowships - advertising now

The previous Green Nephrology fellowships have shown that leading a move to sustainable healthcare is a great educational opportunity for an individual, as well as being an exciting project to be involved with. Clinical fellowship schemes around the country offer a chance to include sustainability in quality improvement - can you help?

Recycling of concentrate bottles - summary

There has been discussion in the Green Nephrology Forum about recycling of bicarbonate containers on the dialysis unit. Many units are now recycling these, but others who would like to introduce recycling have been looking for reassurance with regard to health and safety. This blog summarises the available guidance on handling/disposal of the excess bicarbonate, and on infection control.

Dialysis heat exchangers - June update

The Green Nephrology Programme successfully bid for funding for the Heat Exchangers project from 10:10 in 2011. The objective is to save energy and carbon in kidney care by encouraging retrofitting of heat exchangers to dialysis machines in use nationwide - following the example of the Kent renal service.  As a result of our contact, a number of units are now developing the business case for investing in retrofitting their machines.

Bike Week 16-24 June

June has arrived and this month's green theme is... cycling.  Bike Week 2012 is running from 16-24 June this year and it would be great if kidney units could take part. The aim is to encourage colleagues (maybe even some patients) to get on their bikes and remember how much they like cycling!

Donating Made Easy

Some of you have asked whether you can donate money to help our work. We have always accepted cheques, but The Centre for Sustainable Healthcare (CSH) has now signed up to Just Giving to make it easier for you to donate small amounts on a regular basis.

CSH is a very small charity, and funding for our core costs is entirely provided by donations and project-focused support. You can help us work to safeguard the future of health and healthcare by contributing to our funding. Please take 5 minutes to donate - any amount will help! Thank you.

NHS Sustainability Day - 28th March: five ideas for kidney units

Next Wednesday is NHS Sustainability Day

Staff recycling questionnaire

This questionnaire, developed by dialysis nurse Mary Thomson in Fife, has been used to raise awareness and gather staff views on recycling at home and at work. You are welcome to borrow and adapt it for your workplace.

Should World Kidney Day be every day?

Happy World Kidney Day! A day for raising the importance of healthy kidneys everywhere. Prevention is of course the greenest form of healthcare, and WKD is a great initiative.  But with 50,000 people in the UK who have end-stage renal failure, there is clearly more to do. So what role does the kidney care community have in stopping new patients from coming through the doors?

Eco-dialysis: the financial and ecological costs of dialysis waste products: is a ‘cradle-to-cradle’ model feasible for planet-friendly haemodialysis waste management?

Nephrol. Dial. Transplant. (2015) 30 (6): 1018-1027.

Approximately 2 million chronic haemodialysis patients produce over 2 000 000 tons of waste per year that includes about 600 000 tons of potentially hazardous waste.
