SusQI project completed as part of The Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS FT Green Team Competition from September - December 2022 by the Home Enteral Feeding Team (HEFT).

The HEFT were announced the winners of the Gloucestershire Competition, well done to Sarah and Laura!

Team members:

  • Sarah Williams, HEFT Manager and Dietitian Training Lead
  • Laura-Marie Baldwin, Lead Specialist HEFT Dietitian

Project Aim:

To evaluate the environmental, financial, social and clinical impacts of

  1. Replacing the use of single use Flo-care feed bottles with reusable Sterifeed bottles for appropriate patients in the Neurologiocal Centre
  2. Extending the life of giving sets from single use to 24 hour use for appropriate patients in the Neurological Centre

The team also aimed to raise the awareness on the impact of health care on the environment amongst staff at their trial site (Neurological Centre), HEFT staff, enterally fed patients and their relatives.

Results:

Environmental Sustainability: If scaled accross the HEFT patient cohort, the team will save 24,722 kgCO2e per year, equivalent to driving 71,204 miles in an average car.

Economic Sustainability: The contract with supplier Nutricia is currently unchanged, however there is an additional cost of £369 for adapters required on reusabel bottles.

Clinical and Social Sustainability:

There is no change to patient clinical outcomes and 100% of staff reported the changes are easy to implement and did not take additional time.

The project addresses patient concerns ont he impact of their care on the envrionment. The project increased staff awareness of the impact of healthcare on the environment, as well as actions that can be taken to reduce this impact.
