AI is increasingly becoming the normal way to operate and we are all using it daily, but many of us feel uncomfortable about the environmental and social implications.
This is a space to have an honest and open talk about what the issues are and how we can minimise the impacts. We will talk about the massive energy consumption and carbon emissions generated by running large-scale AI models which drives electricity demands and water use.
Large data centers require millions of gallons of fresh water daily to cool the servers. What does this mean for local water supplies particularly in drought-prone areas? What are the implications in terms of waste (electronics and hardware)? What are the social and financial consequences of being part of system reliant on a few powerful companies and the human costs of labour used to make these systems work.
Do you use AI for work? What are the benefits and how can we minimise the other aspects of the systems? Please come along for a discussion.
