CSH Pharmacy Susnet Event: Reducing Medicines Waste in Hospitals

We are delighted to welcome Fiona Watson, Principal Pharmacist for EPP and Flow, Northern General Hospital, Sheffield to present the Medicines Assessment for Discharge (MA4D) scheme. The MA4D scheme reduces duplication of dispensing at the point of discharge and ensures patients are only supplied with the medicines they genuinely need. MA4D has been nationally recognised via the National Healthcare Finance Awards for its impact on reducing the environmental impact of unnecessary medicines waste. By preventing over-supply and unnecessary dispensing, the scheme is helping reduce pressure on NHS budgets while maintaining patient safety and ensuring appropriate clinical care. Over the first five months of the project, the reduction in waste delivered an estimated £55,000 saving. The project saved an estimated 77 tonnes of CO₂ emissions in 2025, equivalent to driving 193,000 miles in an average petrol car.
